1921-2016 MANCHESTER CENTER, VT Erwin Bruce Hallett, Jr., 94, a pioneering cardiovascular surgeon who for many years led the Department of Surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, N.J., died on March 8, 2016 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He lived at Equinox Village in Mancester, VT. The cause of death was a heart attack. Bruce was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 4, 1921, the son of the late Erwin Bruce and Clara (Engel) Hallett, Sr. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and was a member of the Class of 1944 at Princeton University where he was named an All-American on the college's 150-pound football team. He received his M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1946 and also a post doctorate in 1953. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, principally in the Mediterranean at the close of World War II hostilities. Married in 1943 to Constance (nee) Carpenter, he returned to New Jersey to establish a surgical practice in Morristown, where he took great pride in his patients, many of whom he called his friends. Part of the team which performed the first open heart surgery in the state of New Jersey, he was named Chief of Surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital (now Morristown Medical Center) and later Vice Chairman of the department. He was named to that institution's Hall of Fame. Bruce was an active outdoorsman, who skied, hiked, canoed and played golf. In addition to trips with his sons down the Allagash River in Maine, he took his wife down the Nahanni River in the Canadian wilderness after his retirement. He is survived by a sister, Lura Hallett Smith of Southbury, CT and by his six children: Christine Norris Miller of Lebanon, NJ, Patricia King Muchmore of Bedminster, NJ, Erwin Bruce Hallett, III of South Londonderry, VT, Thomas H.E. Hallett of Pebble Beach, CA, Laurence Hallett of Stamford, CT, and Gay Katherine Collins of Preston, CT. He has 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
