Ethel H. Nichols 1924-2011 MANCHESTER, VT Ethel H. Nichols, 87, a resident of Bonnet Street in Manchester, died peacefully Monday October 17, 2011 at her home with her family by her side. She was born in Bennington, Vt., on September 26, 1924 the daughter of Charles and Erna Helmer Haldiman. She attended schools in Manchester and graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary. She then married John W. Nichols, Jr. on October 3, 1942 and lived on the Nichols Farm in Dorset, Vermont until John's death in 1984. At that time she moved in with her niece Diana Wilson in Manchester. Since a child she was devoted to caring for any and all animals. During her many years on the dairy farm, one of her favorite chores was to care for and feed her calves. In later years Ethel enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bird watching and country music. She was pre-deceased by her husband of forty two years "Junior" Nichols, her brother Frank C. Haldiman and her sister Gertrude E. Haldiman. Ethel is survived by her sister Louise H. Keene and niece Diana L. Wilson, her sister-in-law Helen N. Tyler and her husband Terry Tyler and sister-in-law Jaska N. Leach. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Ethel will be held Sunday October 23, 2011 at 1 p.m. at The United Church of Christ of Dorset and East Rupert. Pastor and Rev. Dr. James Gray, will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery in Dorset. A calling hour at church, will preceed the service at 12 Noon, one hour prior to the service. Friends and family are invited to a reception, back at church, following the interment service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Ethel's memory be made to the or Second Chance Animal Shelter, c/o Brewster Funeral Service P.O. Box 885 Manchester Center, Vermont. The family wants to thank all the nurses, aides, homemakers, caregivers, and friends who so lovingly cared for Ethel. She was a very special woman who will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
