HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Eugene A. “Gene” Salluzzo, of Bussey Lane, died on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hoosick Falls on Dec. 7, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Josephine Milanese Salluzzo Sr. He was the loving husband of the late Mary “Liz” Hewson, whom he married on Dec. 27, 1952 in the Immaculate Conception Church. She died on Sept. 1, 1992. Gene was a lifelong resident of Hoosick Falls and attended St. Mary’s Academy. Mr. Salluzzo served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in December 1946 after four years of service. He received the following citations: the Asiatic-Pacific One Star, American Theater Good Conduct, Philippine Liberation one star, Invasion of Okinawa one star and the World War II Victory Medal. He participated in two atomic bomb tests in Bikinna Island in the Marshall Islands on both July 1 and July 25 in 1946, aboard the battleship USS.New York B.B. 34. Upon completion of military duty, Gene returned to Hoosick Falls and worked for the family business, Salluzzo’s Grill. He retired in 1992 after working for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for 35 years.

Gene was a member of the following organizations: The American Legion Post No. 40 for over 50 years, American Battleship Association, National Association of Radiation Survivors, National Association of Atomic Veterans, The Hoosick Falls Kiwanis Club, charter member of the Lions Club in Hoosick Falls, a volunteer at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Town of Hoosick Historical Society, Salvation Army of Hoosick Falls and past president of the Local Carriers Union.

Survivors include his children, Susan E. Salluzzo of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Antoinette (William) Craver of Camarillo, Calif., Jean Andrew of Bennington, Vt. and Louis E. Salluzzo of Hoosick Falls; and his sisters, Jennie Leonard and Jem Fleming of Hoosick Falls. He was especially fond of and idolized his 10 grandchildren, Justin M. (Betty) Yarnal, Mary E. Yarnal, Sara Andrew, Christine, Jessica and Laura Craver; William Craver III, Cory, Bradley R. and Evin T. Jorgensen. He is also survived by his special friend, Suzanne Carpenter of Bennington, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Anthony, Louis, Joseph A. Jr., Alphonse (Fonzie), Angelo, Alfred (Fred), Angelo, Albert and Alberto, and two sisters, Eleanor Murphy and Mary Spickler.

A liturgy of Christian death and burial will be celebrated by Gene’s nephew, the Rev. Patrick F. Leonard, on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, Main Street, Hoosick Falls. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited the Robson-Reinfurt Funeral Home, 72 Main St., Hoosick Falls, on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., when the family will receive visitors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center’s Memorial Fund in loving memory of Eugene A. “Gene” Salluzzo.
