Eugene George Scrivens

1924-2014 SHAFTSBURY Eugene George Scrivens, age 89, a resident of Sycamore Lane in Shaftsbury, VT. died on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington on July 24, 1924, and was the son of the late George W. and Marguerite D. Therriault Scrivens. He received his education in local schools and is a graduate of Bennington High School, in the Class of 1943. Following high school, Eugene entered the service and proudly served with the 2nd Division Marine Corps from 1943 until 1946 in the Pacific. He returned to Bennington following the war. On May 12, 1951 he married the former Lillian Rancourt at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Eugene had been employed at the former BenMont Paper Co., EZ Mill, Warrin Wire Co. in Pownal and for many years had been employed at Union-Carbide Co., from which he retired. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington and the 2nd Marine Division Life Member. Eugene's hobbies included photography, fishing, building model airplanes and talking on the CB radio. He enjoyed traveling especially to visit relatives whether it was across the country or in Vermont or Canada. He enjoyed his pets and watching auto and motorcycles races. Besides his wife, Lillian, Eugene is survived by his daughter, Linda Jean Scrivens of Winooski, Vt.; his son, Steven E. Scrivens and daughter-in-law, Lisa Gates of Bennington, Vt. and five grandchildren, Forest and Austin Scrivens of Winooski, Stephanie Marie Scrivens of Bennington, Cecille Lynn Scrivens of Bennington and Steven Eugene Felt and his wife Shanda of Pownal Vt.. He leaves six great-grandchildren, Steven, Connor, Evan, Carson, Makayla and Bentley Felt, all of Pownal. Eugene is also survived by his sister, Matilda Scrivens Jordan Corey and her husband William Corey of Bennington; several nieces and nephews and their families. He also leaves sister-in-law, Paulita Rancourt Croker of South Burlington, Vt.; brothers-in-law Roger Rancourt and wife, Arleen of Brunswick Maine and Maurice Rancourt of Bennington. Surviving cousins are George Therriault of Alaska/Florida, Theresa Berthiaume White of Washington state, their families and numerous relatives around Vermont, including the descendants of his grandparents John "Jack" William Scrivens and Elizabeth Hicks Scrivens Ranney Fleming of Hyde Park, Vt. Eugene was predeceased by his parents-in-law, Henry and Lucille Yandow Rancourt,; sisters-in-law, Claire Rancourt Hyde Bonenfant and Marie Rancourt Krawczyk; and brothers-in-law, James Croker, John "Jack" Hyde, Guy Bonenfant and Francis Krawczyk. He is also predeceased by cousins Carroll Colby of Morrisville, VT, Hilaire Therriault, Alfred Therriault, Maurice Therriault, and Aurora Therriault Carpenter, all originally from Pownal and Frederick Berthiaume of Adams, Mass.. Gene is now reunited with four infant children, George Henry, Rosemary, Anita and Joseph Jude. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be held on Friday afternoon, June 27, at 12:30 p.m.at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. Interment with military honors will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.in Bennington. There are no calling hours scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Church, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Bennington Rescue Squad through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
