WEST ARLINGTON -- Eugenia May Woodard, 81, a resident of River Road, died Monday evening, Dec. 15, 2003 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness, her family was by her side.

Born in Arlington on Aug. 17, 1922 she was the daughter of John Squires and Lulu Hoyt. She was raised from an early age by her mother and step-father Cecil Wilcox. She grew up in West Arlington where she attended school. She was married to Douglas Woodard on Aug. 4,1940 at The First Congregational Church in Manchester. Mr. Woodard died April 28, 1974.

For many years she had assisted her husband in the operation of their family farm, The Woodard Farm on River Road, which their son, Edgar, now operates. Mrs. Woodard had worked for many area families as a housekeeper and caretaker of second homes, several of these people became lifelong friends.

Her home was always open to those who came to visit and often became the gathering place for family and friends, she especially enjoyed kids in particular her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their friends.

She had been a member of The Chapel on the Green and had taught Sunday School there in earlier years.

She leaves her two sons, Edgar Woodard of West Arlington and Donald Woodard of Jonesboro, Ga.; two daughters, Joyce Metcalfe of Bennington and Carolyn Tobin of Havelock, N.C.; three brothers, Bill Wilcox of West Arlington, Paul Wilcox of Arlington and Stuart Wilcox of West Arlington; two sisters, Betty Perrott of Bennington and Mildred Neron of S.D.; grandchildren John Metcalfe, Patricia Dewey, Angela Cannistraci, Donald Tobin III, Michael Tobin, James Tobin, Connie Woodard and Donna Woodard; 19 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rene Woodard.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 18 at 2 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Truscott, interim pastor of the Federated Church of East Arlington, officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodard family lot in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service.
