SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Eva Bartling Gates, 92, formerly of Cambridge, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa, where she had resided for a short time.

Born Aug. 16, 1911, in Pittstown, she was the daughter of Walter and Florence Quackenbush Bartling. On April 14, 1928, she married Delmer L. Gates. Delmer died in 1973.

Eva worked at Rice’s Seed House and then she and her husband ran the laundry at Mary McClellan Hospital. After his death, she was the cook at Meikleknox United Presbyterian Home. She moved to Schenectady in the late 1970s.

Eva loved children and took care of more than 50 children. Such close bonds were formed that many returned to visit her, bringing their own children, in later years.

She was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church in Schenectady.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Gates of Schenectady and Beverly Davis and her husband Martin of Ballston Spa; two sisters, Helen Eddy of Eagle Bridge and Louise Splatt of Albany; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at 10:30 a.m.

Friends and relatives are invited to call an hour before the service.

Burial will be private.
