CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Evalyn S. Gillis, 101, a former Cambridge resident, died peacefully, Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 at Glens Falls Hospital after a very brief illness. She was the widow of Lewis W. Gillis.

Born June 1, 1902 in South Argyle, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mattie (Guthrie) Saunders. She attended the local schools.

She worked as a seamstress in several of the clothing manufacturing shops in the Greenwich area. After their marriage, she helped her husband on their farm in Archdale (town of Easton). Following his death, she moved to Cambridge to her home on Avenue A.

In her later years she was a resident of Meikleknox United Presbyterian Home, which became The Cambridge Guest Home. She moved to the Pleasant Valley Adult Care Home last year.

Evalyn was a member of the Cambridge First Presbyterian Church and the Cambridge and Greenwich Senior Citizens. She enjoyed traveling and went on many of the senior-sponsored trips.

Along with her husband, she is predeceased by her son, L. Warren Gillis; her grandson, Gary Gillis, who died in September 2003, and her four siblings, Willard and Jay Saunders, Olive Copeland and Ruth MacNaughton.

Survivors include a grandson and his wife, Terry and Helen Gillis of Fremont, N.H.; a nephew and his wife, Coolidge and Jane Copeland of Argyle; her grandson’s widow, Diana Gillis of Las Vegas, Nev.; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and their families.

There will be a graveside service in the spring at Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge. Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, Cambridge.
