Evelyn W. Hewitt 1938-2008 PETERSBURGH, N.Y. - Evelyn W. Staples Hewitt, 69 of River Road died on Tuesday morning at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington after a five week battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Pittsfield, Mass. on March 25, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Frances Rathbun Staples. She was the loving wife of Rolland L. Hewitt whom she married on August 7, 1960 in the Stephentown Federated Church. She has lived in Petersburgh since her marriage. Evelyn graduated from Berlin Central High School in 1956 with her future husband Rolland. She worked as an operator for the Columbia-Rensselaer Telephone Co. in West Lebanon for a short time. Mrs. Hewitt worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service in Petersburgh from 1963 until her retirement in 1997. She was a 47 year member of the Petersburgh Volunteer Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. Evelyn was a caregiver to her aunt, Hazel Barrett, of Pittsfield; a 2004 Breast Cancer Survivor, loved to walk with her best friend Karen Maxon around Petersburgh, loved holidays and decorating, enjoyed to visit Zema's Nursery having Sara Palmer help her with her outdoor needs and especially enjoyed attending her grandson Dylan's sporting and school events. Evelyn loved the ocean, vacationing in Maine and shopping in Kittery, Maine. She leaves her husband of 47 years, Rollie; her daughter, Stephanie, and her husband, Todd Hover, of Stephentown; her grandson, Dylan Hover; a brother, Ronald Staples Jr, of Stephentown; a niece, Jennifer, and nephew Ron Jr. FUNERAL SERVICE: Funeral services will be on Friday at 2 p.m. in the THOMAS M. BARBER FUNERAL HOME, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh where Rev. J. Mark Norland will officiate. Burial will follow in the Meadowlawn Cemetery on Hewitt Road. Relatives and friends are invited to the fuenral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. for visitation.
