Florence W. King 1928 - 2009 NORTH BENNINGTON Florence Witham King, 81, a former resident of North Bennington, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at the Prospect Nursing Home. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 29, 1928, the daughter of Harold and Dorothy Nolda Witham, Florence received her early education in Canada. She was the great-grand-daughter of the Landgrave George Pozer of Quebec. She married Keith Evans King on Aug. 25, 1956, in Montpelier. Mr. King, a Bennington trial attorney in practice with the late Waldo C. Holden, a former state's attorney and the first President & Executive Director for Vermont Legal Aid Corporation. Mr. King died Aug. 14, 1971. She graduated from Southern Vermont College where she delivered the 1973 Class Valedictory address "Motherhood, Not Prostitution, Is A Woman's Oldest Profession." Florence studied law while employed at the Bennington law firm of Gilbar, Breese & Sanderson, and later owned and operated Paralegal Abstracts Inc. in Bennington. She later lived in Columbia, S.C., where she worked as an office Manager for the Jenkins & Jenkins Attorneys Law Firm. She returned to Vermont in August 2007. She leaves sons Stephen King (Sherry) of Columbia, S.C., and Charles Andrew King of Berkeley, Calif.; daughter, Caroline L. King of Pinole, Calif.; sister-in-law Jane King of Litchfield Park, Ariz.; a sister, Marjorie Salvas (Max) of Lenoxville, Quebec; nephews, Peter Salvas of Sudbury, Ontario, Harold Witham and Richard Witham of Moose Factory, Ontario, George Witham of Ontario, and Howard Witham of Canada; nieces, Dorothy Tucker of Montreal, Norah Miner of Sudbury, Ontario and Sheelah Witham of BC, and several grand nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services in Bennington will begin with a prayer at the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington today, Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Florence Witham King may be made to either the Alzheimer's Disease Association or Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church Youth Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
