POWNAL --Floyd E. “Horkey” Woodcock Sr., 82, a resident of Cardinal Boulevard, died peacefully Friday evening, July 9, 2004 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Woodcock was born in Cooperstown, N.Y. on Feb. 27,1922; he was the last surviving child of 11 children born to the late Samuel J. and Minnie B. (Roe) Woodcock. He received his education in Cooperstown schools where he grew up.

A World War II Army veteran, he served in the Philipinnes where he was assigned as a guard of POWs. He was married to Lydia Maria Wilcox in Binghamton, N.Y. on Aug. 16,1941; she predeceased him on Dec. 20,1992.

Mr. Woodcock had worked as a farmer for many years at several area farms including the former Fillmore Farms in Bennington, Bob Fowlers farm, Robert Rudd’s farm and Northwest Hill Farm, all in Pownal. He later worked at the former Pownal Tanning Company, where he became a supervisor, retiring from there after 28 years of service at the age of 62.

He was a former member of the Pownal Fire Department, a charter and life member of the American Legion Post 90 of Pownal, a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Bennington and a longtime member of the Elks Lodge 567 of Bennington.

He enjoyed fishing, watching football on television, his grandchildren and especially dirt-track stock car racing which he enjoyed with his family.

He is survived by his sons, Floyd E. Woodcock Jr. of Arcadia, Calif., David E. Woodcock of Pownal and Samuel J. Woodcock of Pownal; two daughters, Donna Lee Burdick and Lisa A. Bump, both of Pownal; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife of 51 years, he was predeceased by a son, Stephen Woodcock, who died Sept. 21,2001.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 13 at 11 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington, with the Rev. John Foster, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in the Woodcock family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.
