Rev. Floyd LaBombard 1921 - 2009 BENNINGTON Rev. Floyd I. LaBombard, 87, of West Road and former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bennington died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at his residence, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in North Adams, Mass., on April 18, 1921, son of Amos and Ada Plass LaBombard, he received his early education in North Adams and was a 1939 graduate of Drury High School. Rev. LaBombard later graduated from Alderson-Broaddus College in Phillipi, W.Va., and was a graduate of Andover-Newton Theological School in Newton, Mass. A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, Rev. LaBombard was stationed in England during that time. Rev. LaBombard first served as pastor of the East Clarksburg Baptist Church in West Virginia for three years before moving to the Central Baptist Church in Norwich, Conn., where he remained for 18 years. In 1970, he came to Bennington as pastor of the First Baptist Church from which he retired in 1982. Rev LaBombard later served as the part time pastor of the White Oakes Church in Williamstown, Mass., for 17 years. He leaves his wife, the former Sara Evelyn Workman, whom he married Aug. 14, 1949, in Spencer, W.Va. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons and daughters-in-law, Jay H. and Patty LaBombard of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Richard F. and Pat LaBombard of Pownal and Steven C. and Nancy LaBombard, of Bennington; two grandchildren, Lori LaBombard of Northampton, Mass., and Nathan LaBombard of Bennington; a sister, Dorothy Jackson of North Adams, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the White Oakes Congregational Church in Williamstown on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Susan L. Stewart, pastor, officiating. Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery, Bennington, where committal services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. Should friends desire, contributions in Rev. Floyd LaBombard's memory may be made to either VNA & Hospice of Southwestern Vermont Health Care or the Green Mountain Chapter of the Alzheimer's Foundation through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
