HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Forrest E. Smith, 90, of Nixon Street died on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at the Hoosick Falls Health Center.

Born in Grafton on May 25, 1913, he was the son of the late Jay and Minnie Stanley Smith. He was the loving husband of the late Helen P. Mina Smith who died on Jan. 30, 2002. They were married in Jersey City, N.J. on Sept. 2, 1945. Forrest attended Grafton schools and worked in a shirt factory in Troy and as a mechanic. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 12, 1942. Forrest served in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, northern France and Rhineland battles and campaigns. He was awarded the European-Africian-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star for meritorious service during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 17, 1945 from the 109th Infantry, Company M at the rank of technician fourth class. He and his wife returned to Hoosick Falls where he worked at Noble & Wood until their closure and as a custodian for the Hoosick Falls Central School District. Mr. Smith was a member of the Hoosick Falls V.F.W., the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Hoosick Falls Senior Citizens. His hobbies included fishing and small engine repair.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Douglas E. and Sheila Smith of Hoosick Falls, Richard J. and Christine Smith of San Diego, Calif.; a sister Helen Mace of Cohoes; along with two grandsons, Brian F. and Matthew R. Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Robson-Reinfurt Funeral Home, 72 Main St., Hoosick Falls where the Rev. Trygve Tomlinson will officiate. Cremation will follow with inurnment taking place with full military honors in the spring at the Saratoga National Cemetery.
