BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Frances H. Bender, 89, widow of John R. Bender, a longtime resident of Convent Avenue, died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington, Oct. 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Mary Maude (Mathers) Healy. She received her education at St. Francis de Sales Academy and was a graduate of Bennington High School in 1933.

Mr. and Mrs. Bender were married at St. Francis de Sales Church. Mr. Bender died April 21, 1952.

In earlier years Mrs. Bender was employed as a secretary at W.H. Wills Insurance Company for 23 years. Later Mrs. Bender held the position of assistant town clerk for the town of Bennington until her retirement on Sept. 1, 1994.

She was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and a longtime member of Court St. Andrew 259, Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include six nieces and nephews, Patricia E. Graham of Manchester, Dr. Robert H. Elwell of Upland, Cailf., Jon Bryan Elwell of Middletown, R.I., Roseanne Hyatt of Erie, Pa., and John Healy of New Jersey; and several cousins. Mrs. Bender was predeceased by a brother and four sisters, R. Kenneth Healy, Marjorie H. Healy, Mildred C. Healy, E. Thecla Healy and Kathleen Elwell and a nephew, Patrick Healy.

The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church on Thursday, July 28, 2005, at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

At the request of Mrs. Bender there will be no calling hours at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
