CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Frances Ellen Carman, 97, died on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 at Judson Retirement Community in Cleveland. She was born Aug. 4, 1906 in Cambridge, daughter of Eliza Marion (Belnap) and David Ewart Carman.

Mrs. Carman was a librarian.

She was a graduate of Ohio State University in 1928 and Western Reserve Library School in 1930. She has been a head librarian in Cleveland and Painesville, Ohio; Flint, Michigan; Pittsfield and Stockbridge, Mass.; Bennington, Vt.; Cortland, N.Y. and in Liverpool, N.Y., where she was honored to have the Frances Carman Room dedicated in her name.

She was president of the Vermont Library Association and AAUW president in Vermont and Painesville.

She loved to travel in Europe and the United States. She retired in 1971 and moved to Judson Retirement Community in 1982. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Cleveland, and loved to sing for her church and community.

She is survived by a niece, Marguerite S. Mershon of Townshend, Vt.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Eliza Marion Belknap, her father, David Ewart Carman and a sister, Anne C. Stone, in 2002.

Graveside service will be in Perry Cemetery, 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. There will be no visitation.

Burial will take place in Perry Cemetery, Perry. Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
