BENNINGTON -- Francis Adolphus Sausville, 74, the beloved husband of Janet (Bushee) Sausville, passed into eternal life on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007. His family was beside him as he fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and as he passed away. He was a loving and wonderful father to his two dear daughters whom he adored.

Francis is survived by his loving wife, Janet, his daughter Susan Marie Sausville of Kearneysville, W.Va., and his daughter Rebecca Fay Sausville of Bennington. He was the grandfather of four amazing boys, who survive, Michael Bruce Sausville Weaver of Pittsfield, Mass., Francis (Frank) David Sausville Smith, Jacob Leonard Sausville Smith and Lucas John Sausville Smith, all of Bennington. His grandsons brought great joy to him each day.

Francis, Fran or Franny to his family and friends, was born in Bennington on April 28, 1933, to Adolphus N. Sausville and Bernadette A. Fortin (adopted Coutu). He studied at Sacred Heart School, Bennington High School and Hudson Valley Community College.

Fran was a veteran of the Korean Conflict in which he served in the U.S. Army. Upon his return to Bennington from the service, he worked at Bennington College and at Union Carbide. He later worked at Tansitor Electronics and Bijur Lubricating in supervisory positions. He was always admired for his impeccable good nature and kindness. He returned to Union Carbide/Eveready, from which he retired after more than 25 years of service.

Fran was married to the former Janet Bushee on June 29, 1957, and they had celebrated 50 years of marriage last June. Fran’s main interests were his family, friends and faith. He had many other special interests; he loved sports and helping his grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting, bowling and many other sports as well. For the past 26 years he had enjoyed his camp and boat at Lake Champlain. From the time he was 13 years old, he enjoyed hunting at his camp on Glastenbury Mountain.

Francis was one of the first members of the Bennington Rescue Squad and had been a member of several other clubs in Bennington.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, now Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, from the day of his birth through his entire life. He loved his church and his faith, and was always there for others. He was a past member of the Sacred Heart Parish Council and served as an usher. Among the many other roles that he served at church, he was an extraordinary minister and altar server. Fran was a dedicated worker at the church food shelf, HIS Pantry, as well as a church decorator for the past 27 years. He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Fran is survived by his brother, Anthony J. Sausville of Burlington, special in-laws, Bruno and Annette Angeli of Ocala, Fla., Jean (Fox) Sausville of Bennington and Fay Lariviere of Hoosick, N.Y. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews dear to his heart. Fran was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Joyce Angeli, and his brother, David Sausville.

There are no calling hours and the funeral service will be on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart St.Francis de Sales Church in Bennington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Bell Tower Restoration Fund, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201. As a special remembrance to Fran, family and friends may bring a non-perishable item for the parish food pantry to the reception following the service which will be held at the Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Parish Center.
