POWNAL -- Francis Edgar “Pa” Haley Sr., 80, a resident of Northwest Hill, Pownal, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington surrounded by his family.

Born in Pownal, Sept. 16, 1925, he was the son of the late Frank Leroy and Mabel (Rathbun) Haley. He received his early education in the Pownal schools and was a 1944 graduate of the former Williamstown [Mass.] High School. A World War II Navy veteran, he served from 1943 until April 1946. During that time he was stationed aboard the USS Mindanoa.

Upon returning to the area he gained employment at the Hunter Machine Company in North Adams, Mass., as a shipping expediter, retiring in 1992 after 49 years of service.

He was married on March 1, 1947, in Stamford to the former Doris Helen Blake. He was a member of St. Raphael’s Church in Williamstown. In December 1946 he joined the Pownal Fire Protective Association and was the last surviving charter member. Mr. Haley had served as dispatcher for many years and also served as department treasurer for 26 years. Mr. Haley was a member of Richard Reuther American Legion Post 152 in Williamstown, the D. Glurren VFW Post in Clarksburg, the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department and the Hunter Machine Company Quarter Century Club. He was also a member of the Turtles and the Fabulous Forties clubs.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Helen Haley; a son and daughter-in-law, Francis and Beverly Haley; a daughter and son-in-law, April and Scott Bump, all of Pownal; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Michael A. Demasi, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating.

Friends may call at the George M. Hopkins Funeral Home, Spring Street, Williamstown, on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pownal. Following the committal service family and friends are invited to return to the Pownal Methodist Church for a time of sharing and remembrance.
