Francis R. "Sonny" Martin Sr.

1934-2012 Francis R. "Sonny" Martin Sr., 78, a former resident of Brookside Apartments died Saturday December 29, 2012 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness.

He was born in Bennington, VT February 25, 1934. He was the son of the late Richard S. Martin Sr. and Dorothy (Eggsware) Martin. Sony received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington High School. He served in the United States Army.

Sonny was employed as a cabinet maker. For 10 years he was employed at the Ben Mont Paper Mill and for 27 years he worked at Cushman Manufacturing in North Bennington. He later worked at Bennington Display from which he retired.

An avid hunter, trapper and fisherman, Sonny was well known for his fly fishing ties. Sonny was of Indian descent and was very proud of his Indian heritage.

Survivors include his children, Wendy Stowe of Burlington, VT, Sally Gauthier of Bennington, Francis "Biff" Martin Jr. of Bennington, Lisa Martin of Bennington, Edward Martin of Bennington, Laurie Whitman and her husband Chuck of Hoosick Falls, NY, Richard Martin and his wife Elizabeth of Pownal, VT, Melody Martin of West Haven, CT and Jennifer Joy and her husband John of Kalispell, Montana; Two brothers, Jerry Martin of Bennington and Peter Martin of New York; Two sisters, Judy Martin of Bennington and Susan Martin; A close friend Janet Judd of Bennington and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a son Joel Martin and a brother Richard Martin.

At Mr. Martin's request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.
