Obituary Condolences

STRATTON -- Francis S. Daley, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend. He fought a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Fran was born in Frankfort on June 19, 1936, the second of Josephine (Lilli) and Anthony Daley’s (Delia) two children. He graduated from Frankfort Schuyler High School in 1954, State University College at Cortland in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and State University College at Oneonta in 1961 with an master’s in counseling. Fran met Carol Bird during his first job while teaching at Frankfort Schuyler Central School. They were married in 1960.

Fran and Carol lived in Oneonta, N.Y., for 37 years, where they raised their four children. In 1998, when the children were grown and both had retired, they moved to their new home at Stratton, where Fran enjoyed his lifelong passion of skiing.

Summers were spent on Canadarago Lake, where Fran enjoyed his other interests of windsurfing and sailing. He also enjoyed reading, music and traveling with his wife.

In 1961, he began his career at the State University College at Oneonta (SUCO) as a physical education instructor, football, wrestling and baseball coach. In 1965, he began 35 years in higher education administration, finally as vice president of student affairs from 1975 to 1995. Fran continued to work for the college part-time from 1995 until 1998 as special assistant to the president.

He became a Canadian Certified Ski Instructor in the early 1960s and later Professional Ski Instructor of America, teaching skiing, first at Mt. Otsego ski area in Cooperstown, N.Y., and then at Scotch Valley (Deer Run Resort) in Stamford.

In addition to Carol, Fran is survived by his daughter, Michele, and her husband, Matthew Pearsall of Oneonta; son, Thomas Delia (Daley) and his wife, Lori (Jewell) of Charlotte; son, Scott Daley and his wife, Eileen (Christman) of Alexandria, Va.; son, Shawn Daley and his wife, Carolyn (Cross) of Slingerlands, N.Y. Fran dearly loved and was proud of his 11 grandchildren: Brian and Kelly Pearsall; Katrina and Zachary Rabeler; Alessandro and Enzo Delia; Taylor and Madison Daley; Matthew, Maggie and Mark Daley.

Fran was predeceased by his parents, an infant sister, and sister, Catherine Ciocca and brother-in-law, Rocco Ciocca, and his in-laws, Thomas and Faynetta Bird (Hattfield). Fran’s family gives special thanks to the many friends for their support during Fran’s many trips for treatment at Dartmouth Hitchcock, to the staff at Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital, and to the staff at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, where he spent his last week in the comfort of their special care.

A celebration of his life will be held at Chapel of the Snows, Stratton Mountain, at noon on Saturday, Feb., 3. There will be no calling hours.
