1924 - 2010 BENNINGTON, VT Francis Joseph "Red' Silver, 86, a long-time resident of Safford Street in Bennington died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.
He was born in Bennington Jan. 27, 1924, son of Edward L. and Margaret C. Kearns Silver. Mr. Silver's father was chief of police in Bennington for many years. He received his education in Bennington.
On Feb. 24, 1941, at the age of 17 he enlisted in the Army Infantry of Company I. He fought in the Pacific Theatre, Marshall Islands and Guadalcanal. While serving on the Battleship "Coolidge" his ship was sunk. When he joined the service, he weighed 185 pounds. After contracting malaria and being honorably discharged on October 18, 1945, he returned to Vermont weighing 112 pounds. For his service Mr. Silver received a Bronze Star. For several years, Mr. Silver played semi-pro football with the Shamrocks in Bennington.
He married the former Antoinette Boutin on Feb. 26, 1949. Mr. and Mrs Silver, with the help of the GI Bill, purchased their home on Safford Street, where they lived for over 50 years.
In earlier years, Francis was employed as a pressman at the Ben Mont Paper Company. For over 30 years he was a salesman at several local car dealerships including Wilson Ford where he was Regional Sales Leader for two years, Hogan Chevrolet, Monument Motors and Thurber's Garage. For several years he worked at the Mount Anthony Union High School in the Maintenance Department.
An avid outdoorsmen, Francis enjoyed deer hunting and rabbit hunting. He was an avid fisherman. He especially enjoyed going to the family camp at Pine Valley in Woodford. Francis was instrumental in the formation of the American Legion Post 13 Baseball Team. He was Past Commander of the American Legion Post 13, and a member of both the Bennington Lodge of Elks #567 and the VFW Post 1332. He was a life member of the Eagle Hose of the Bennington Fire Department.
He leaves his wife, Antoinette Silver of Bennington; three sons, Charles Silver of Bennington, Michael Silver and his wife, Marilyn, of North Bennington and Patrick Silver of East Concord; seven grandchildren, Amanda Silver of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Emily Silver who is presently a teacher at the University of Hebei in China, Robert Silver presently attending law school at the University of Iowa, Geoffrey Silver of Bennington, Rebecca Silver of Bennington, Taylor Silver of East Concord, and Brandon Langlois of Bennington; two great-grandchildren, Alexia Elizabeth Allard and Maddox Michael Allard of Bennington; a sister, Ann Maynard of Bennington, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Silver.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Monday Feb. 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer. and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church where the Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. The burial with military honors will follow at the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Sunday Jan 31, 2010, from 2 to 5 p.m.
If friends desire, contributions in memory of Francis "Red" Silver may be made to the American Legion Post 13 Baseball Team through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
The following organizations are requested to meet at the funeral home on Sunday to conduct their services: American Legion Post 13 2:30 p.m., Bennington Lodge of Elks 3 p.m., VFW Post 1332 at 3:30 p.m. and Bennington Fire Department 4 p.m.
