NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Mr. Fred J. Marchegiani, 77, a resident of White Oaks Road, Williamstown, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at the North Adams Regional Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Readsboro, Vt., March 8, 1927. He was the son of the late Emilio and Mildred (Hawkins) Marchegiani. He received his elementary education in Stamford, Vt., and later attended Drury High School in North Adams.

He married the former Lorraine Foster on Oct. 9, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Williamstown. Fred was the love of her life for 60 years.

Fred served during the Korean War with Company C of the 172nd Infantry out of Bennington, Vt.

In earlier years, Fred worked in a paper mill in Monroe Bridge. For 15 years he worked at Sprague Electric in North Adams and for 35 years was employed at Williams College, where he worked as a carpenter and later as athletic groundskeeper, until 1980 when Fred was diagnosed with Guillian Barret Syndrome. For 23 years, Fred and his wife Lorraine were half owners of the Star Diner on Simonds Road in Williamstown.

Fred was a member of the American Legion Post 90 in Pownal, Vt., the Moose Family Center of Bennington and the Bennington Elks Lodge #567. He was a life member, commander and chaplain of the D.A.V. in Middlebury, Vt. From 1983 to 1998, he and Lorraine were campground hosts for the Green Mountain National Forest. Fred and Lorraine enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their motor home. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and after being diagnosed with Guillian Barret Syndrome, he shot two deer for five years in a row.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine Marchegiani of Williamstown; two sons, Bruce Marchegiani and his wife Judy of Manchester, Vt., and David Marchegiani and his wife Karen of Pownal; a daughter, Penny Willette and her husband Bud of Pownal; nine grandchildren, April Tam of Boston, Tammy Decker of Ozark, Ala., Shannon Morse of Hebron, N.Y., Corey Marchegiani of Kosovo, Melissa Davock of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Daniel Marchegiani of Pownal and Sarah Marchegiani of Pownal, Travis Willette of Manchester, N.H. and Tony Willette of Burlington, Vt.; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael David Marchegiani.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Pat MacHugh, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Williamstown, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday from 1 to 3 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

The following organizations are requested to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home to conduct their services: The American Legion Post 90 at 1:30 p.m., Bennington Moose Lodge at 2 p.m. and Bennington Lodge of Elks at 2:30 p.m.
