Fred B. Tifft 1910-2011 BENNINGTON Fred B. Tifft, 101, a longtime resident of South Street in Bennington died Thursday October 13, 2011 at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington. He was born in Bennington, Vt., August 4, 1910. He was the son of the late Fred E. and Mabel (Barber) Tifft. He received his education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington High School. He later attended Brown University. Fred dedicated his time and talent for many years to both the town and former village of Bennington. His service to his community carried on a family tradition that was started by his father, Fred E. Tifft, who was appointed Chief of Police of the village of Bennington in 1903. Fred served as a member of the Bennington Police Department from 1940 1944. He was elected Town Auditor in 1939 and re-elected in 1942. He retired from that position in 1945. He was elected Village Trustee from Ward 5 in 1953, re-elected in 1956 and retired from that position in 1959. He returned in 1966 and served until Dec. 31, 1970. While a Village Trustee he served on many committees dealing with the streets, fire and police department and at times served as Chair of those committees. In earlier years Fred had been employed at General Electric in Schenectady, New York and later at the Bijur Lubricating Corporation in Bennington. He was a member of the Mount Anthony Lodge of Masons F&M in Bennington. He married the former Martha Whitney on March 30, 1932 in Cambridge, NY. Mrs. Tifft died June 18, 2010. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Dr. Roger Herdman of Washington, D.C.; a son in law Albert Elwell of Northfield, Vt., a daughter in law Patricia Tifft of Durham, N.H. Eighteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Susan Elwell and a son Richard W. Tifft. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside committal service will be held at Park Lawn Cemetery on Tuesday October 18, 2011 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mary Lee Clark, Pastor of the Second Congregational Church officiating. If friends desire contributions in memory of Fred B. Tifft may be made to either the Susan B. Koman Foundation or the Vermont Kidney Foundation through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT. 05201
