Fred W. Johnson 1918 - 2009 BENNINGTON Fred Wesley Johnson, 91, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, in Bennington. Born in Leicester on Jan. 18, 1918, the son of Fred and Edith Sweeney Johnson, he received his early education in local Leicester schools and had attended Brandon High School. Mr. Johnson had worked as a machinist for more than 46 years, at Newton-Thompson Wooden Toy Manufacturing Company, Baker Brush and Vermont Tubbs, all located in Forestdale, retiring in 1980. On Dec. 24, 1939, he married Helen Coates in Brandon. They made their home in Forestdale until moving to Rutland in 1955. He and his wife moved to Bennington in May 2008 to be near their daughter. Mrs. Johnson died March 26, 2009. Mr. Johnson enjoyed gardening and traveling frequently throughout the United States with his beloved wife, Helen. They particularly enjoyed visiting Cape Cod in the summer and Vero Beach in the winter. He leaves his daughter, Marilyn Marrion of Bennington; two sons, Thomas Johnson of Bennington and Lane Johnson of Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister, Sally Bryant of Forestdale, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Four brothers, Archie, Floyd, Willis and Norman Johnson, and three sisters, Dorothy Racine, Fern Simpson and LaVerna LaRock predeceased him. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral service will be Friday, May 29, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at the MILLER & KETCHAM FUNERAL HOME in Brandon. The Rev. Albert "Skip" Baltz, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, will officiate. The graveside committal service and burial will follow in the family lot at Pine Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10:30 until the time of the service. Following the ceremony, the family will receive friends at St. Mary's Church Parish Hall for a time of fellowship and remembrance. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to Bennington Rescue Squad, 120 McKinley Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
