Frederick E. Harvey 1933 - 2011 SHAFTSBURY Frederick E. Harvey, 77, of Eagle Street, died Friday, June 24, 2011, at his residence, following a long illness. Born in Bennington on Nov. 25, 1933, he was the son of the late Chester E. and Eleanor L. Greene Harvey. Fred received his early education in Bennington and later at North Bennington High School. Fred served seven years in the Vermont and Connecticut National Guard. He later served as a motor sergent in the Army and was stationed at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Fontainebleau, France. Fred was employed for over 36 years by the State of Vermont Department of Labor as a safety officer for Tramways, retiring in 2001. In earlier years, he had been employed at the William E. Dailey company in Shaftsbury. For over 50 years, Fred also served as the manager and electrician at Mount Equinox for the Davidson family and later for the Carthusian Foundation. Fred enjoyed hunting, especially big game, in Vermont and Northern Maine. He was notably fulfilled through his longtime association with the Carthusian Order of Monks and Mt. Equinox in Sunderland managing and overseeing their 7000+ acreage, diverse business relations and day-to-day operations, including their electrical and wind power systems. Fred married the former Glenna M. Sherwin on Feb. 25, 1957. Glenna died June 26, 2006. He later married the former Claire Lorenz McDonald. Survivors include his wife, Claire Harvey of Shaftsbury; a son, Aretinolio Barbarossa of Arlington; two stepsons, Darrell E. Longtin of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeffrey A. Longtin of Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren; a sister and two brothers, Evelyn Harvey, Donald Harvey and his wife, Linda, and Phillip Harvey and his wife, Eleanor, all of Shaftsbury, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred was predeceased by a sister, Jean L. Harvey. FUNERAL NOTICE: Committal services will be Sunday, July 17, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery, Shaftsbury.
