Frederick C. Rieben III

1944 - 2016 ARLINGTON, VT Frederick C. Rieben III 72, of Arlington, VT passed away Saturday May 21, 2016 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, after battling a courageous fight of cancer and lung disease. Fred was born in Rome, NY on March 3, 1944, he was the son of Frederick C. and Flora Lorena Hinman (Wright) Rieben. He grew up in Camden, NY graduating high school in 1962, he then attended the New York Ranger School. Following graduation he began a life-long career with the U.S. Forest Service, he transferred to Vermont in 1969 to the Green Mtn National Forest Division. He worked in the recreational division taking care of the campgrounds in the summer and ski areas in the winter. He was called to fight forest fires in the western states and he also inspected ski lifts for the Southern Vermont ski areas along with working the ski patrol. After retiring he was busy buying and selling logs with Forrest Mayer and was also the Night Watchman at Bromley Village. Fred was a former member of the Arlington Fire Department, he enjoyed old cars, especially his Studebaker, going fishing, camping, skiing, NASCAR and Mrs. Murphy's to talk with his friends. However his greatest satisfaction was his family. He enjoyed fishing with Charles and playing games with Emma and telling her childhood memories of Pompi NY. Fred leaves his sons Christopher Rieben and wife Vivian of Cambridge, NY and Mark Rieben of Trumansburg, NY, daughter Heidi Cross of White Creek, NY, brother Bruce Rieben and wife Helen of Booneville, NY, sisters Joanne Boyce and husband Harold of Gafney, SC and Donna Tanner and husband Jim of Valrico, FL, grandchildren Charles Hodge and Emma Cross, nieces, a nephew, great nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his former wife Nancy (Snow) Rieben. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday May 25 at 6pm with Reverend Kathleen Clark officiating at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home Arlington Chapel, friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3-6pm when the family will be present.
