NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Frederick Stephen Ciepiela, 78, of East Main Street, died Friday morning, April 7, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Holyoke on July 4, 1927, a son of the late Stephen Ciepiela and Catherine (Pietrzycka) Ciepiela. He moved to Adams at the age of 5 and attended the St. Stanislaus Parochial School and the Adams High School. He graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1946.

Mr. Ciepiela was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman second class on the USS Biloxi and the USS Bunker Hill until his honorable discharge on Aug. 1, 1946.

Following his military service, he returned to North Adams and was employed at Sprague Electric Co. for a short time. Mr. Ciepiela then joined the General Electric Co. in Pittsfield, where he was employed for more than 40 years, until his retirement in 1988 as a senior draftsman designer.

He was a communicant of Notre Dame du Sacre Coeur Church in North Adams. He was a member of the North Adams Lodge of Elks and the former Lafayette Club. He was also a member of the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion in North Adams and the GE Quarter Century Club.

Mr. Ciepiela was a troop leader for Boy Scout Troop 64 in North Adams. He was also a member of the Adams Turners. He enjoyed bowling and woodworking. He was well-known for his handy-work. He was an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife, the former Lorraine M.R. Richards, whom he married on July 29, 1950, in Notre Dame Church by the Rev. Forand; two daughters, Kathleen L. Martin of Bennington, Vt., and Karolen L. Plante and her husband, Joseph, of Pittsfield; four sons, Ronald F. Ciepiela and his wife, Margaret, of North Adams, Glenn A. Ciepiela and his wife, Vicki, of Reno, Nev., James R. Ciepiela of North Adams and David T. Ciepiela of Adams; eight grandchildren, Thomas Ciepiela, Tyler Ciepiela, James Ciepiela, Jonathan Ciepiela, Corey Ciepiela, Ashley Ciepiela, Taylor Ciepiela and Zachary Martin; also nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Melissa Annette Ciepiela, died Feb. 4, 1966.

Two sisters are deceased. Helen Ciepiela died May 18, 1996, and Jane Ciepiela died Feb. 20, 1993.

The funeral for Mr. Ciepiela will be held Monday, April 10, 2006, at 8:15 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations to VNA-Hospice of North Berkshire may be made in care of the funeral home.
