Frederick Toner 1923 - 2009 BENNINGTON, VT Frederick Toner, 86, a former resident of Bennington and more recently of Springfield and Chester, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Bennington Health and Rehab following a long illness. Born in Boston, Mass., Aug. 21, 1923, to unknown parents, he was left at an orphanage after birth with only the name of baby boy "Toner." The caretakers at the orphanage named him "Fred." Throughout his early life, he was sent from one foster home to another. When he was old enough, he left to enter the service, but instead went into the"CCC's," who were at that time building Hapgood Pond in Peru. There he met his future wife, Thelma Greene. He and Thelma married on Jan. 9, 1943, in West Pawlet and then moved to Wallingford where Fred was offered employment as a truck driver for Gays Express, which later became Holmes Transportation. Fred was a teamster and worked for Holmes for the next 38 years. Thelma passed away on June 13, 1990, and on April 14, 1992, Fred married Ada Norris in Chester. Fred was extremely social and was able to talk to anyone. He easily made friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed playing cards with his newfound friends while at Bennington Health and Rehab, and will be greatly missed by all of them and his caretakers.
