Garth Lockwood Caldwell 1940-2008 MANCHESTER Garth Lockwood Caldwell, 67, passed away on April 7 at the Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington. He was born in Mohawk, N.Y on Dec. 9, 1940, son of Lisle and Dorathy Caldwell. He was educated in schools in N.Y. State and was a graduate of Palm Beach High School and the Culinary Institute of America. While living in Fla. he married Mary Shattuck on Feb. 8, 1964 and they moved back to Vt. in 1965. He worked for several years in local restaurants. He then worked for Manchester Hardware and began his own ceramic installation business. He was also a school bus driver for Burr and Burton and the Dorset School; it was at this time he got involved in helping with the girl's soccer and softball teams at Burr and Burton. He was fondly known as the "Candyman" by all the kids. Doing this was a very important part of his life until he became disabled. Garth was a member of the Manchester Fire Department and a lifetime member of the U.S.F.A. Garth also was a friend of Bill W's for over 23 years. Garth leaves his wife of 44 years, Mary and his mother-in-law Lia Shattuck; his son Dale and his wife Kristina and their two daughters Ella and Erin of Charlotte, Vt.; his son Christopher and his wife Delania and their three daughters, Robyn, Nicole and Savanna of Wynatskill, N.Y. He will also be remembered by his beloved cats Mr. Cooper and Tigger. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held Friday April 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Garth's memory be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Manchester Firefighters Association c/o Brewster Funeral Service PO Box 885 Manchester, VT 05255.
