BENNINGTON -- Gary A. Michaels, 65, a resident of South Street, Bennington, went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2004 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Hoosick Falls, New York June 30, 1938, he was the son of Eleanor (Jones) Michaels and the late Clarence L. Michaels Gary received his education in Berlin, New York and graduated from Berlin Central High School in 1956. Following graduation he served from 1956-1959 in the U. S. Army. He is also a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y. Gary married the former Janet LeBlanc at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington on Sept. 26, 1959.

Gary retired after 30 years from the Watervliet Arsenal as a Numerical Control Repair Foreman. After his retirement, he owned and operated Michaels ‘ Photography in Bennington with his beloved wife, and worked part time at Nastech and Abacus He was a member of the Vermont professional photography group, wedding and portrait photographers international and the professional photographers of New England.

Gary was an active member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church and for many years a leader in the BASIC youth group and the cursillo group. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 307. In addition to his home and family, his hobbies included photography, ice fishing, traveling extensively and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Michaels of Bennington; a daughter and son in law, Lynne and Jerry Wilson of North Petersburgh, New York; two sons, Rev. James A. Michaels and his wife Jody of of Lancaster, New Hampshire, David P. Michaels and his wife Rose of Shaftsbury; seven grandchildren, Gary and Kelly Wilson, Nicki Shearer, Crystal Chase, Joshua, Sean and Bailey Michaels; one great grandchild, Caleb James Wilson. His mother Eleanor Michaels of Bennington; a sister, Carole Brock and her husband Earl of Petersburgh, New York; two brothers, Robert L. Michaels and his wife Elaine of Berlin, New York and William J. Michaels and his wife Sandy of Glascow, Kentucky; his mother and father in law Everett and Ida LeBlanc of Bennington; a sister in law and brother in law Doris LeBlanc and Mike Devins of Bennington. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church Tuesday April 6, 2004 at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Family and friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery in North Bennington. Should friends desire to make a contribution in memory of Gary A. Michaels they may be made to Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, Vermont 05201.
