Genevieve Elwell

1920 - 2014 BENNINGTON Genevieve L. Elwell, age 93, a longtime resident of Sycamore Lane in Shaftsbury, Vt. and more recently of Rivers Edge Community Care Home in Bennington, died on Friday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2014 following a brief illness. Born in Bennington, Vt. on Dec. 9, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Eli C. and Lucy (Bellemare) LaPorte. She received her education in Bennington. She married Verder O. Elwell at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on July 4, 1941. Mr. Elwell died May 31, 1983. In earlier year, Mrs. Elwell was employed by Stanley Tool Company in Shaftsbury for 20 years until the time of her retirement. Genevieve was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington and a member of the St. John's Sodality. She is survived by one sister, Evelyn Carelli of Eagle Bridge, N.Y. and several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters; Rita Scullary, Lorraine Vivaldi, Marjorie LaPorte and Beatrice Scott and her brothers; Robert LaPorte and Raymond LaPorte. FUNERAL NOITCE: A Prayer service will be held at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 21, at 12:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at 1 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. Interment will follow in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the prayer service. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA and Hospice of Rutland, through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201. Genevieve's family would like to publicly thank the staff of Rivers Edge and VNA and Hospice for all the care and compassion that she received during her several years there.
