George A. Allard 1918-2010 BENNINGTON Mr. George A. Allard, 92, a resident of Weeks Street in Bennington, died Friday October 8, 2010 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington. He was born in North Adams, July 24, 1918. He was the son of the late George A. and Marcelleine Allard Allard. He received his education in North Adams, and later attended St. Joseph's Business College. A World War II veteran, Mr. Allard served in the United States Navy. He married the former Rita Bronson in North Adams. Mrs. Allard died December 18, 1969. He later married the former Rita R. Boutin on September 2, 1972 at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. In 1936 Mr. Allard was employed at Bennington Garage. He later purchased the business from which he retired in 1983. George served on the former Bennington Catholic High School Board, was a member of the Finance Committee at Sacred Heart Church and served as Water Commissioner for the Town of Bennington. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 307 and the American Legion Post # 13. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church. George and Rita enjoyed traveling in their motor home throughout the United States. They also traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, St. Thomas, Bermuda and Europe. They also spent many winters in Florida. George enjoyed biking, playing golf and cards and spending time with family and friends in Vermont. Survivors include his wife Rita Allard of Bennington. A son George J. "Gigi" Allard and his wife Angela of Bennington. A daughter, Andrea Powers of Hinsdale. Six grandchildren, Kellie Meisl and her husband Steve, Colleen Powers and Marcia, Richard Powers and his wife Lisa, Matthew and Brian Allard and Erin Webster. Four great grandchildren, Christopher and Nicholas Powers, Benjamin Meisl and Maddix Webster . A sister, Theresa Wood of North Adams. A brother, Alfred E. Allard of Barrington, Rhode Island. ,several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Rosemary Webster, two sisters Madeleine Fitzgerald and Veronica McCann and a brother Norman R. Allard FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday October 12, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. The burial with military honors will follow in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday October 11, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of George A. Allard may be made to either the School of Sacred Heart Saint Francis or through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main Street Bennington, VT 05201. All members of Knights of Columbus Council 307 will meet at the funeral home, Monday evening at 6 p.m., for the recitation of the Rosary in memory of Mr. Allard.
