Obituary Condolences

George F. Lenhardt 1920 - 2008 SALEM, N.Y. George F. Lenhardt, 87, of Salem died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his beloved bride of 63 years, Rosemarie, and their loved ones, on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008. George leaves Rosemarie and their two children, George Lenhardt and Nancy Lenhardt, and their spouses, Andrea Lenhardt and Laurie McBurnie. George's other survivors include granddaughters, Karrie Bowen and her husband, Geoffrey; Mandy Mayer and her husband, Jed; and grandson, Scott Lenhardt. George has three great-grandchildren, Aidan, Finley and Griffyn. He served in the Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Texas, where he earned a variety of medals, including four bronze stars and the Navy Combat Medal. An avid cook, George was often heard whistling his own tunes in the kitchen. He could also be found mowing his lawn, towing his grandchildren around behind the lawnmower in a trailer, or watching his favorite football team, the Washington Redskins. George was born on Christmas Day in 1920 in College Point, N.Y., where he also grew up and raised his family. He worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years. He and his wife moved to the Salem area after he retired. Our "Poppy" was also affectionately known as "Gramps" by his group of friends at Stewarts in Salem, whom he visited daily. Because of his service duty in World War II, he was unable to complete high school. In June 2001 George was presented with an honorary high school diploma from Salem Central School. Poppy will always be remembered as a smiling, joking, whistling man who would often remark, "This is the happiest day of my life." "And when one of us is gone and one is left to carry on, then remembering will have to do. Our memories alone will get us through. Think about the days of me and you, you and me against the world!" Love, your Bride.
