George H.W. Shields

GRAFTON, N.Y. -- George H.W. Shields, 59, of Babcock Lake, died at his home Friday, July 7, 2006. Mr. Shields was the son of the late Dr. George H. Shields and Rose M. (Reznik) Shields. He was the husband of Jan Shields of Babcock Lake.

Mr. Shields was born on June 10, 1947, in Manhattan, and grew up in Utica. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High school in Utica and attended Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica and Syracuse University. George worked in the transportation field throughout most of his career. He was employed at the formed Page Airways in Albany and was clerk for the Boston and Maine, Conrail, Delaware, and Hudson and Canadian Pacific railroads, retiring on disability in 1994. He had valiantly struggled to overcome a neurological movement disorder for more than 10 years.

Before his illness, he was a member of the Grafton Planning Board and was active in the Babcock Lake Estates and Babcock Lake Property Owners Association.

In addition to his wife, George is survived by two sons, G. Zachary Shields of Latham, and Jacob T. Shields of Plantation, Fla.; a brother, Robert M. Shields of Niskayuna, N.Y.; he is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at 1 p.m. at St. John Francis Regis Church on Olands Road in Grafton. Cremains will be interred at the Hoosick Rural Cemetery in Hoosick, following the service. Relatives and friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St., in Hoosick Falls on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
