George Arthur Pratt

1923-2012 George Arthur Pratt, age 89, a longtime resident of Crow Hill Road in Pownal, and more recently of the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington died on Sunday morning, November 4, 2012 surrounded by his family.

He was born in Pownal on March 1, 1923, and was the son of the late George M. and Jennie (Crandall) Pratt. He received his education in local schools. He proudly served in the Marine Corps from December 15, 1942 until February 7, 1946. George was a Sargent at the time of his discharge. He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross.

Following the war, he came back to Pownal and ran Pownal Garage. George had also been a Deputy Game Warden in Bennington County for several years.

Shooting was his hobby, and he holds the world record at 1000 yards, and the Marine Corp League Tournament National Record. He was an avid guitarist also, and spent time playing for the other residents at CLR.

Survivors include his children: Susan Dickinson and her husband George, of California, Sally Mattison and her husband Stephen of Aurora, CO, and Barbara Hornsby, of Brandon, FL and step- children; Betty Arnold, Kathy Western, Michael Tatro, Robert Tatro, and David Tatro.

He leaves thirteen grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

George is predeceased by his two wives; Evelyn (Blake) Pratt and Cecelia (Tatro) Pratt.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial service will be held on Thursday afternoon, November 8, 2012, at 4:00PM at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington with Ronald Murphy, officiating. Military honors will be offered as part of the services.

Interment will take place in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery on Friday morning, November 9, at 10:00AM.

There are no calling hours scheduled.
