George M. Renner

1916 - 2014 POWNAL George M. Renner, 98, a longtime resident of Pownal, and more recently, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, died on Thursday morning, April 10, 2014. He was born in Rochester, N.Y. on March 27, 1916, and was the son of the Matthew J. and Alice Tyrell Renner. George attended St. Augustine's Grammar School, and St Thomas Aquinas Academy, both in Rochester, NY. He is a graduate of New York State School of Forestry College at Syracuse. He married the former Helen Norwood Thompson on April 17, 1943, at the Selman Army Air Force Base in Monroe, La. Mrs. Renner predeceased him. He was employed by Darcy Tree Service in Indiana before entering the service in 1941. George served in the Air Force until 1949 on active duty. He was in the Reserves until his retirement, as a Lt. Colonel, stationed on Okinawa. Over the years, he has been employed for the former Bell Laundry, Cushman's Furniture, First Vermont Bank, and Merchants Bank, from which he retired. George was a member of the Pownal Fire Department since 1951. He was a former Secretary-Treasurer of the Bennington County Mutual Aid Fire Service. In earlier years, George had been very active in the Pownal Boy Scouts Program. He previously had been Coordinator of the AARP Tax Aid to Elderly, and had walked with Voltran for the American Red Cross. He enjoyed his dogs, horses, and flower gardening. He is survived by nieces, and nephews, Beverly Logan (Peter), Nancy, Thomas, and Fred Renner; great-nephews, John, Dan, David, and Joe Fingler; his godchildren, Beth Thompson Cote (Ron), Amy McLenithan (Joel), Ryan, McKayla, and Aaron Blakeman (Kim), and Darcie Johnson (Charles), and families. George was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Renner. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon, April 13, 2014, at the All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home at 3 p.m. with the Rev. James Holden, officiating. Interment will take place later in the spring in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal. Friends may call at the All Faiths Chapel on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pownal Fire Protective Association, the Pownal Library and/or the Pownal Food Pantry through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
