George A. "Spooney" Sponauer

1924-2012 POWNAL George A. "Spooney" Sponauer, 88, a former resident of Barbers Pond Road, Pownal, Vt., died Monday September 10, 2012 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

He was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., February 27, 1924. He was the son of the late Anthony C. and Pearl (Sorber) Sponauer. He received his education in Lee Park, PA. He later attended Bucknell University where he studied Engineering for six months.

A World War II veteran Mr. Sponauer served in the United States Air Force as a navigator. He navigated B 24 Bombers on 50 combat missions and survived three crash landings.

On October 16, 1943 George married the former Rose Marie Heyse in Louisiana. Mrs. Sponauer died November 12, 2008.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sponauer moved to Wilkes Barre, Pa., where he started a woodworking business. After a few years he sold the business and worked as an instructor for the people he sold the business to. He then moved to Lenox, Mass., where he sold mobile homes and then to Pownal, Vt., where he built and sold mobile homes for three years.

George enjoyed oil painting. He owned over 90 paintings, some of which he donated to the veterans group at the VA Clinic in Bennington. He also enjoyed going to the Bennington Recreation Center to swim.

Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Annette and Dean Dixon of Pownal, two sons and daughter in laws, Kenneth and Paula Sponauer of Wallingford, Conn., and Eric and Sheri Sponauer of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A sister Dorothy May Phifer, of Binghamton, N.Y. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service celebrating the life of George A. Sponauer will be held at a later date which will be announced in the paper.

Private committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
