George W. Hathaway, Sr. 1925 - 2009 BENNINGTON George W. Hathaway, Sr., of County Street went from this life to the next on July 6, 2009, at the age of 84. George was born in North Hoosick, N.Y., on June 7, 1925, the son of S. William and Ethel Cornell Hathaway. He received his education in the Hoosick school system. In 1943, on his eighteenth birthday, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was engaged in combat activity in the South Pacific. After his discharge in 1946, he moved to Bennington and was employed for several years as a taxi driver and then as a shipping clerk for the Bijur Corporation. In 1957, George started his lifelong career as a truck driver for St. Johnsbury Trucking, Company from which he retired after 34 years of service. George was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Mt. Anthony, #13 and the American Legion. George was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross and the Vermont Visually Blind Association. His wife, the former Gertrude A. Westfall, with whom he enjoyed 54 years of marriaage, died Aug. 5, 2001. They were married July 4, 1947. George leaves his three children, Evelyn Heggie and her husband, Thomas, Dorothy LeBlanc and her husband, David, and Mary Kaffan and her husband, Stephen; his brother, Marvin Hathaway of Bennington; two sisters, Ruth Woodard of Schenectady, N.Y., and Betty McManus of Cooperstown, N.Y. He was predeceased by his son, George W. Hathaway, Jr. who died at the age of 19 in January, 1977; by his sisters, Alice and Anna, and by five brothers, Kenneth, Charles, James, David and Frank. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of George W. Hathaway, Sr. will be Friday, July 10, 2009, at 7 p.m. at HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main Street. There will be no visiting hours. Masons from the Mt. Anthony Lodge #13 are asked to arrive at the funeral home by 6:15 p.m. The family requests that flowers be omitted and that gifts in George's memory be made to Mt.
