George J. Welsch

1933 - 2015 BENNINGTON George J. Welsch, 81, a former resident of Shaftsbury, VT and more recently of Bennington passed away Friday April 3, 2015 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington following a long illness. He was born in Bayonne, N.J. on May 30, 1933. He was the son of the late George J. and Helen (Aldbeck) Welsch. George received his early education in New Jersey. George served in the United States Navy as an Electricians Mate from 1953 to 1955. After his Navy service he obtained a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959 from the New Jersey College of Engineering now called N.J.I.T. He married the former Louise May Galusha on August 30, 1958 and they resided in Somerville, Warren Township; Medford, N.J., and Doylestown, PA. In 1959, Mr. Welsch began his career as an engineer with the Johns-Manville Corporation Research Center in Manville, N.J. In 1967 he joined the Rohm and Haas Company in Bristol, PA where he managed the Plastics Engineering Laboratory and was responsible for developing several very important patents and furthering the development and wide spread use of Plexiglass and acrylic sheet materials. He was a founder and on the first Board of Directors for the Mount Holly, New Jersey State Bank. George was a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Jersey and the State of Vermont and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He enjoyed designing and constructing home additions and other various residential structures. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, camping, gardening, boating, and canoeing. He leaves his wife, Louise May Welsch of Bennington and beloved dogs, Sandy and Peanut; three children and their spouses; Lt. Colonel (Retired) Russell Welsch and Colonel (Retired) Carol Welsch of Albuquerque, N.M.; Dr. Valerie Hale and Jonathan of Belchertown, MA and their daughters, Helen Louise and Audra Lynn Hale; Teresa Chaput and David of Brookville, MD and their daughters, Amanda May, Melissa Ann, and Cassandra Lynn. George also has a brother, Joseph P. Welsch of Fort Lauderdale, FL and a sister, Evelyn Dowling of Toms River, N.J. along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. At the request of Mr. Welsch there will be no formal funeral services. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Vermont Veterans Home, BPI and the VA Clinic for the excellent care they provided to George for many years.
