SCOTTSBORO, Ala. -- George Wilson Spitler, beloved and cherished husband of Margaret P. Spitler, departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at his home in Scottsboro. Mr. Spitler was formerly a resident of Buskirk, N.Y. and Old Bennington, Vt.

He was born March 2, 1922, in New York City, the son of Paul A. and Bernardine Spitler. He attended The Loyola School in Manhattan and graduated from Columbia College, class of 1943. He spent three years in the U.S. Navy, 1943-1946. During his career in sales, Mr. Spitler was a representative for various gift and food/bakery companies, most notably the family-owned business, Spitler & DeBragga; International Bakers Services; Bakery Crafts: Pfeil and Holing; and Bloekers Chocolate.

Mr. Spitler was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie M. Spitler, and son, Richard M. Spitler.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, James Spitler, Dorothy Martino, Heidi Reynolds, John Spitler and Heather Spitler; stepdaughters, Melanie Harnett Hoffmann and Caroline Harnett Goss; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Stephanie Spitler; a nephew and two nieces.

A eulogy was given by Mr. Johnnie Byrd at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, and a service of last rites was performed by the Rev. Fletcher Comer of Sewanee, Tenn., at the Scottsboro Funeral Home. A private burial service will be held at Island Hill Cemetery in Buskirk at the convenience of the family.
