Gerald M. Carpenter 1949 - 2012 BRISTOL, VT Gerald M. Carpenter, 62, of Bristol died Jan. 30, 2012, in Bennington, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 30, 1949, son of Chester Carpenter and the late Wilma (White) Carpenter, he grew up in Newport. He was an Eagle Scout and received a Masters in Physical Education. He was a former physical education teacher in Bristol schools, and he and late wife, Carol, were involved in Special Olympics programs, where they worked with many athletes. Jerry was a certified track and field official for the U.S. Olympics, with a concentration on the long jump and field events. A member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, his strong abiding faith changed his life and helped to sustain him in the last months of his life. He leaves his father, Chester Carpenter; sister, Kathy Carpenter, both of Newport; fiance Roberta McLaughlin of Bennington.
