Gerald D. Legacy 1927-2009 BENNINGTON FALLS Gerald Douglas Legacy of Venice, Fla. departed this life on the morning of September 14, 2009 in Sarasota, Fla. Gerald was born on September 23, 1927 in Bennington Falls; the second child of Edward James Legacy and Ruth Gertrude Jepson Legacy. He attended the Cobblestone School in Bennington. Jerry worked at the McCullough farm, E-Z Mills and Garrison Printing in North Bennington and also as a carpenter with his father for many years. In the 1970's, he developed and operated a campground in Columbia, North Carolina before moving to Southern Maine. He worked as the maintenance supervisor at Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he retired in 1989. Jerry married Marie Elizabeth Blodgett at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington in 1949. He served in the Army Quartermaster Corps from 1955-1956. During this time he and Marie lived in France. Jerry enjoyed travel throughout his life, and in retirement visited all 48 contiguous United States, as well as Canada, Mexico and England. During his travels he photographed covered bridges throughout the country from which he crafted many model replicas which have been exhibited in Florida. Gerald was pre-deceased by his brother Edward, Jr. (Pete) and sister Beverly Satterlee; is survived by his wife Marie of Venice; sons Dean of Arlington, Virginia and Jan of Sarasota; brother Donald of Bennington; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Interment will be at Hinsdillville Cemetery in Bennington at a private service.
