Gerald S. George 1924 - 2012 BENNINGTON, VT Gerald Schuyler George, 87, a resident of East Main Street in Bennington, passed away early Saturday morning Jan. 28, 2012, at his home. Gerald was born in Queens, Long Island, NY, on July 28, 1924, son of Nicholas and Lillian (Kopich) George. He received his education in Catholic schools in New York, graduating from St. Michael's High School. Upon graduating from high school in 1942, he entered the Coast Guard, serving in the Pacific until he was discharged in 1947. Gerald started his working career in aircraft manufacturing, working for Republic Aviation on Long Island, Sikorsky Aircraft in a management position, receiving advanced education, and taking courses for the Air Force to keep up with needs and technology. Upon moving to Vermont, Gerald owned and operated the Mt. Holly General Store. After selling the store, Gerald worked for General Electric in Rutland for six years. Gerald enjoyed woodworking and gardening and was a member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington and started the Mt. Holly Rescue Squad. Gerald is survived by his children, Barbara Ann Stricsek and her husband, Ernie, of Westford, Mass., Gerald P. George and his wife, Bette Sue, of Sandy Hook, Conn., Debra Hawkins and her husband, Richard, of East Wallingford, and Steven George and his wife, Connie, of Wallingford, and his grandsons, Geoff and Jeremy Stricsek. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Betty Jane Smith, whom he married in January 1947. Mrs. George passed away June 8, 2011.
