Gerald M. Moffitt 1931 - 2009 BENNINGTON Gerald M. Moffitt, 77, of East Road died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Born in Shaftsbury on May 2, 1931, son of Paul and Blanche Elwell Moffitt, Gerald received his early education at the Harwood Hill School in Bennington and was a 1949 graduate of Bennington High School. Mr.Moffitt served in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. Mr. Moffitt in earlier years owned and operated his own welding business first in Bellows Falls, and later in Bennington. For 27 years, he was employed at the Union Carbide Corporation from which he retired. An avid outdoorsman, Gerald loved to hunt and spend time at his camp in Mount Tabor. He also enjoyed canoeing and hiking and, in earlier years, motorcycling. A jack-of-all-trades, he was an excellent welder, a natural born craftsman, and an all-around tradesman. Gerald had also built his own log home. The family would like to thank a special niece, Andrea Mattison for the special care that she had given to Gerald. He married the former Rita LaBrie on Sept. 25, 1954, at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Besides his wife, he leaves their children, Jim Moffitt of New York City, Debra DesCognets of Lanesborough, Mass., and Brian Moffitt and his fiancé, Veronique Cheniaux, of Rochester; three grandchildren, Nick DesCognets of Richmond, Va., Aliza Jayne Moffitt Fegan of Rochester, N.Y., and Damien Shane Moffitt of Manhattan, N.Y.; a sister, Elizabeth Mattison of Shaftsbury; a half-brother, Tom Mooney of Upstate New York, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and Fred Moffitt; by a half-sister, Paula Bedaw, and by a half-brother, Dwight Moffitt. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at 1 p.m. from the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME. The burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery where military honors will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home today, Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Gerald M. Moffitt may be made to either Saint Jude's Children's Hospital or Ones Favorite Charity through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
