Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Funeral services for Gerald P. Morrissey were held Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church where the liturgy of Christian death and burial was offered by the Rev. Vincent Coppola, c.s.c., associate pastor. Also taking part in the funeral Mass was the Rev. Michael A. Demasi, chaplain of Knights of Columbus Council 307.

Organist was Don McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray. Hymns offered during the funeral service were “Ave Maria,” “Be Not Afraid,” “On Eagles’ Wings” and “Prayer of St. Francis.” Mr. Maurice Rancourt sang one verse of “What A Wonderful World” and played one verse as a trumpet solo. “What A Wonderful World” was offered at the end of the service.

The funeral pall that draped Mr. Morrissey’s casket during the service was placed by his sons, Jason and Mark Morrissey. A wooden cross was then placed on the casket by his mother, Phyllis Morrissey. The scriptural readings were offered by James Colvin and Mark Morrissey. The offertory gifts were presented by his sisters, Diane Daley and Mary Morrissey and a niece, Kathleen Daley. Words of remembrance were given by Jason Morrissey and Francis Morrissey, a cousin. Acolytes were Charles Gould, Leonard Anzivino, John Reed and James Kempf.

Bearers were Charles Silver, Nicholas Harrington, Gerald Corbett and three cousins, Michael, Dennis and John Hart.

A prayer service at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home preceded the funeral Mass.

In attendance at the service were several present and former members of both the Vermont state Legislature and the Bennington Board of Selectmen and Bennington School Board. Mr. Morrissey had formerly been a member of each of these groups.

The wake service was offered at the funeral home on Sunday by Father Coppola. On Sunday, members of the Knights of Columbus were led in the recitation of the Rosary by Father Demasi. Members of the Bennington Elks club also conducted services at the funeral home during visitation. Also paying respects to the family on Sunday were members of the Bennington Fire Department, the Business and Professional Women and the Bennington Eagles club.

Burial took place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery with Father Coppola offering the committal prayers.

Following the funeral service, a reception was held at the Mt. Anthony Country Club.

Mr. Morrissey, a resident of Knapp Drive, died Jan. 6, 2005, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
