BENNINGTON -- Geraldine C. Gallant, 83, a longtime resident of Bennington, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, unexpectedly at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington.

She married Ray in Bennington on Sept. 4, 1941. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Gerry worked as a bookkeeper for Vermont Restaurant in Bennington and William Hurley, CPA. She was an avid reader and passionate Red Sox fan. Gerry was considered a baker extraordinaire, enthusiastically providing all the baked goods for family and friends events. She became known as “Grandma” to all who ate her goodies. Her extraordinary cooking abilities were always particularly appreciated each year at deer camp. Gerry also volunteered as a “Gray Lady” at the Southwestern Medical Center, formerly Putnam Memorial Hospital, in Bennington and St. Francis Elementary School.

Gerry is survived by husband, Raymond; her daughters, Donna Carlson and Marilyn Field and their respective spouses Jim and Doug; grandchildren Renee Bessette, Raymond Harrington, Kevin Harrington, Melissa Scheffler, Scott Carlson and Ben Field; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her two nieces, Jane Cole and Alice Cone. She was predeceased by Raymond, her favorite son; her granddaughter, Michelle Harrington; her great grandchild, Ashley Bessette; her sisters, Margaret Rash and Marion Morse; and her brother, Bill Stratton.

Gerry will be missed by her beloved dog Trooper and will be fondly remembered by many as the great maker of potato salad and apple pie. Close family and friends will remember Gerry as “Battle Axe,” a name lovingly given to her by Ray.

Gerry will be missed by all whose lives she has touched with her caring and kindness. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, from 3 to 5 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m.
