1919 - 2015 BENNINGTON Geraldine Marra Sausville, age 95, a longtime resident of Dewey Street, died on Sunday evening, Feb. 1, 2015 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in Bennington on March 2, 1919 and was the daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Stoppiello Marra. She received her education in local schools and is a graduate of Bennington High School and St. Joseph's Business School. On Easter Sunday, Apr. 19, 1942, she married Robert A. Sausville, her high school sweetheart, in Bennington. While Mr. Sausville was serving during World War II, Geraldine and a group of other women from Bennington went to work for Pratt-Whitney in Connecticut, building airplane engines. She traveled extensively, accompanying her husband during his extended military career, always making a home for her family, sometimes under difficult conditions. She volunteered her services to the American Red Cross as a dental assistant at various military installations throughout the United States. Upon her husband's retirement from the US Air Force, and their return to Bennington, she volunteered as a nurses' aide and later as a Grey Lady at Putnam Memorial Hospital now Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Geraldine was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington and a member of the Catholic Daughters. She loved her pets, bowling, collecting antiques, knitting, cooking, baking and was an avid reader. She will be remembered as an outgoing, vivacious person who was always concerned with the welfare of others. Geraldine is survived by her husband, Robert of Bennington, her children; Sharon E. Bennet and her husband, Gene of Virginia Beach, VA, her son, Robert A. Sausville Jr. of Clifton, VA, and her son, Peter C. Sausville and his wife, Debbie of Clifton, VA. She leaves seven grandchildren: Christine, Paul, Stephen, Peter, Catherine, Zachary, and Rachel Marie, and seven great-grandchildren; Jacob, Molly, Megan, Allison, Danielle, Nicholas, and Daniel. Gerry is predeceased by one granddaughter; Lauren Grace Sausville, her two brothers, Nicholas and Francis Marra and her daughter-in-law Sarah Jane Sausville. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Prayer service will take place on Saturday morning, Feb. 7, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home followed by the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.
