Obituary Condolences

ARLINGTON -- Gerard McManus, 65, a resident of Sandgate Road in Arlington, died Monday evening, March 20, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 16, 1940, the son of James and Anna (Patridge) McManus. He received his education in Brooklyn, where he attended St. Theresa of Avila Elementary School and graduated from St. Leonard High School. Gerard graduated from Brown University School of Banking. He married the former Sally Sullivan at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Brooklyn on Feb. 1, 1964.

Gerard was the auditor and vice president of the Greenpoint Savings Bank, where he worked for 25 years. He worked for the United Counseling Services in Bennington for 12 years and also served as auditor for the town of Arlington.

Gerard was a die-hard New York Yankee fan till the end and was an all-around sports enthusiast. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He loved his dogs and enjoyed listening to bluegrass music. He was a big Hank Williams fan. Gerard was active in Little League and his community, both in Brooklyn and Arlington. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life, especially when he was with his family. Gerard was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Arlington, where he also taught religion class.

He is survived by his wife Sally McManus of Arlington; four sons, Thomas McManus of Granville, N.Y., Roger McManus and his wife, Ivonne, of Cambridge, N.Y., Richard McManus and his wife, Barbara, of San Diego, and Stephen McManus of Rutland; two daughters, Susan Sullivan and her husband, Robert, of Caroll Stream, Ill., and Nancy McManus of Watertown, Mass.; his brother, William McManus of Elmont, N.Y.; his sister, Kathleen Gunkel of Walnut Creek, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kobe and Owen McManus and Christopher and Ryan Gavigan; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, James McManus.

A Mass of resurrection will be celebrated Saturday morning, March 25, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church in Arlington. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Columban’s Cemetery in Arlington.

Visiting hours at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home Arlington Chapel will be Friday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.
