Gerda H. Syversen 1934 - 2011 SHAFTSBURY, VT Gerda H. (Lex) Syversen, age 76, formerly of Monroe, Conn., Norway, and Shaftsbury, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Bennington Health and Rehab. Gerda was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on Dec. 21, 1934, to Michael and Louise (Hörmann) Lex. She attended Bassick High School in Bridgeport, Conn., and Teacher's College of Connecticut (now Central Connecticut State University) in New Britain, Conn., graduating in 1956 with a Master's in Teaching. She taught primarily 4th grade at Monroe Elementary and Fawn Hollow Elementary Schools in Monroe, Conn., retiring in 1981 after 25 years. She also worked part-time for many years at the Monroe Public Library (now Edith Wheeler Memorial Library). Gerda married Per Syversen of Norway in July 1981 in Stepney (Monroe), and moved to Norway where she lived for 13 years, returning to the U.S. in 1994 to live in Vermont where she would be close to her family. She attended Shaftsbury Methodist Church, and worked part-time at the Bennington Free Library. She was a seasoned world traveler, visiting more than 35 countries and many U.S. states. She also loved to go to plays and concerts with friends, and was an avid stamp collector. Predeceased by her parents and husband, Gerda will be remembered by a sister, Anita (Henry) Martinka of Shaftsbury; nephews, Henry (Marcy) Martinka and Karl Martinka of Shaftsbury; nieces, Karen Gaboury of Bennington and Lynn (Matt) Chronister of Edgartown, Mass; great-nephews, Austin Martinka and Jack Chronister, and great-nieces, Stephanie Gaboury and Madeline Chronister, as well as family in Germany and many friends in Connecticut and Vermont. MEMORIAL NOTICE: The family will celebrate Gerda's life at a private service. Burial will take place in East Village Cemetery in Monroe, CT. The family wishes to thank the staff at River's Edge and Bennington Health and Rehab for caring for Gerda during the duration of her illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Free Library or the through the office of the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
