Gerold J. "Jabo" LaCroix 1929-2012 BENNINGTON Gerold J. "Jabo" LaCroix, 82, a resident of Orebed Road, Bennington, died peacefully surrounded by his loving and grateful children on March 26, 2012. Born in Bennington on September 2, 1929, he was the son of the late Marshall J. and Aldea (Page) LaCroix. Jerry received his education in Bennington and was a 1948 graduate of Bennington High School and a 1949 graduate of Cheshire Academy. He was was a star basketball player at both institutions. For many years Jerry was employed as the produce manager at the former A&P grocery in Bennington, and was known for his kind words, friendly smile, and artful displays. Jerry excelled at everything he was involved in; he was an accomplished hunter, flower and vegetable gardener, and fisherman. Jerry taught himself the rare art of fly tying, and spent many happy hours on the Battenkill and other local rivers and streams. Jerry was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington, wherehe served as an usher. He belonged to the Bennington Elks Lodge 567, and was a longtime member of the Eagle Hose Company, Fire Department in Bennington. For many years, Jerry served as a mentor and basketball coach to scores of young men at both the Sacred Heart School and Bennington Catholic High School. His friendly face and generous spirit brought joy to all who knew him. Survivors include five children and their spouses, David and Lowre LaCroix of Arlington, Robert LaCroix of Watkins Glenn, NY and Evelyn Efinger LaCroix of Albany, N.Y., Susan and Michael Pare' of Starksboro, Vt., Michael and Linda LaCroix of Bondville Vt., and Teri LaCroix of Burlington, Vt. Jerry also leaves twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Couch of Bennington and a brother and sister in law, Bernard and Chris LaCroix of White Creek, N.Y. Jerry is also survived by his former wife, Elsine (Moss) Sweet of Bennington. He was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, Normand and Eugene LaCroix. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place at the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery, North Bennington. Should friends desire, memorial contributions in Gerold J. LaCroix's memory may be made to the Silver Towers Camp through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
