DELAND, Fla. -- Gerry Alexander, 56, a former resident of Bennington, Vt., passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at his home in Deland. Born May 29, 1949, in Orange, N.J., he was the son of Maria Alexander and the late David J. Alexander, both of Bennington, Vt.

Gerry attended Sacred Heart School and Bennington Catholic High School, graduating in 1967. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 through 1972, primarily stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. Following his military service he obtained a business degree from St. Joseph’s College and subsequently worked at Crescent Manor Nursing Home, the Alexander family-owned business.

In 1978 he moved to Florida and married Janice Powell of Bennington, Vt. He then began his long career working for the United States Postal Service. Over time he relocated to Springfield, Mass., later married Kathy O’Brien and eventually returned to Bennington, where he continued his employment as a postal letter carrier for many years. Upon his retirement in December 2004, he moved to Deland where he attended Stetson Baptist Church and volunteered with Deland Meals on Wheels.

Gerry enjoyed bowling, antiques, vintage cars and NASCAR. He was a Jamie McMurray fan and never missed a race. He also enjoyed cooking, especially trying new recipes, and loved to read cookbooks. Gerry was also a cat lover.

Survivors include his mother, Maria Alexander; his brother, David Alexander, and his wife, Donna, of Bennington. He also leaves four sisters, MaryAnn Ames and husband, Garry, of Avon, Ohio, Pattie Alexander and husband, Doug Hammon, of South Deerfield, Mass., Joan Shaplin of Nashville, Tenn., and Jane Alexander and partner, Steve Lepore, of Greenfield, Mass. Gerry was predeceased by his sister, Clare. He also leaves an aunt and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Vermont, Ohio, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Gerry also leaves behind his special friends in Deland: Anita, Eric and Nancy, as well as his cat, Spooky.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Missionary Alliance Church, Crescent Boulevard, Bennington. Calling hours will be at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Contributions may be made in Gerry’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Bennington County or a favorite animal shelter in care of Mahar & Sons Funeral Home.
