RUTLAND Sister Gertrude Conway, (William Marie), 99, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, (MA), died in Mont Marie Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Holyoke, MA on June 13, 2015. A native of Rutland, VT, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Shelvey) Conway. Sister Conway entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Vermont in 1944 from St. Peter Parish, Rutland, VT. She became a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield in 2001 when the two communities merged. She attended St. Peter School and graduated from Mt. St. Joseph Academy, Rutland. She earned a B.S. degree from Trinity College, Burlington, VT and an M.S. degree from Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. Sister Conway was a charter member of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and played cello also with the CVPSC orchestra and the Sisters of St. Joseph Orchestra. She sang in church choirs in both Rutland and Bennington. Sister Conway taught at St. Peter School, Christ the King School and Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Rutland, VT and St. Francis de Sales School in Bennington, VT. She taught in the business departments at Bennington Catholic High School, St. Joseph College and Southern Vermont College in Bennington. She was active in the business community of Bennington, as well. In 1999 she retired to St. Joseph Residence in Rutland, later moving to Mont Marie Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Holyoke, MA. In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her four brothers, Richard Shelvey, Patrick Edward, John Thomas and William Martin Conway; and three sisters, Catherine Teresa Sebasky, and Sisters Mary Patrick, RSM and Mary Joachim, RSM. FUNERAL NOTICE: The wake and funeral will take place at St. Peter Church, Convent Avenue, Rutland on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 The wake will begin at 9:30 a.m. There will be a prayer service at 10:30 a.m and the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104. Arrangements entrusted to Sampson Funeral Home and Clifford Funeral Home.
